Do you feel overwhelmed with never ending bills and higher spending?
If so, I can help...
My financial wellness journey started with a “funny” incident in 2013, when my wife and I were living in Costa Rica. One day we were on our way home and were listening to an ad on the radio about this “amazing-exclusive-once-in-a-lifetime-ultra-mega offer” for a cruise from Miami to the Caribbean. They played this ad multiple times and of course they said that the offer was only for the first 100 people or so that called a specific number during the next 20 minutes.
As soon as we got home, I decided to rush, call and pay for the cruise and give my wife this amazing surprise. After all, this was an “amazing-exclusive-once-in-a-lifetime-ultra-mega offer” for only 100 people and for a limited time only. After I called and paid, I went to give my wife this great surprise and as you can imagine, she was surprised, but not in a good way…. She was shocked to hear that I decided to spend our hard-earned money in an impulsive way without consulting her. Yikes!
We then started to look at other expenses this trip represented such as the airfare. We started to realize that there was a lot of missing information about what was covered in the amount I just paid and what was not. I quickly searched and found terrible reviews. Then, I immediately called back to cancel and asked for a refund, without knowing that there was no refund policy because, well…… this was an “amazing-exclusive-once-in-a-lifetime-ultra-mega offer”. How dare I call and cancel!
This “funny” incident triggered a big event in our lives that drastically improved our financial wellness.
We did a deep analysis into how we were managing our finances and how to get better at it. Also, this started a one-year fight with the company that sold this offer which in the end I won and got all our money back ^_^
“The more you make, the more you spend, the greater your debt is”
Something that I have learned in my financial wellness journey is that people do not know how to manage their finances. It doesn’t matter where you are from or how much money you make. The more you make, the more you spend, the greater your debt is. You are “taught” that saving is important, that you have to work hard until you retire, and that you should find a financial advisor to help you with your investments.
People don’t know what to do with their money. They spend it without thinking, as you saw from my story above, they are not able to differentiate between what they need and what they want, and they drown in debt to live a lifestyle that they can’t afford.
“Gold is the money of kings, silver is the money of gentlemen, barter is the money of peasants – but debt is the money of slaves.”
